Working Outside the Box

mountain of boxes of books
Boxes and boxes of brand-new books, delivered Nov. 22.

Unpacking the very last box of that delivery, less than one week later. See the smiles!

Gaithersburg Library staff members have been busy unpacking, processing, sorting, and shelving the new books that will greet you when you visit us come January.  Does that caption say "very last box"?  Not quite! We'll soon be unpacking, reviewing, processing, sorting, and shelving materials from boxes stored for us in the county's warehouse.

It's a lot of work, but we know the community will be excited to see the fruits of our labor.  There's lots of good reading ahead!

The word about the library's reopening is spreading.  We had a visit from a Gazette reporter and photographer early last week.  Have you seen their story and photos?

Viewscapes

One of the first things you’ll notice upon visiting the soon-to-open Gaithersburg Library is the abundance of natural light.

Readers, browsers, and dreamers can gaze out windows in just about every section of the building, and clerestory windows frame the drifting clouds, shedding light from above.

From windows on the second floor, you can see two areas of green roof, an environmentally sensitive feature of the building.  Green roofs reduce storm water runoff and heat-island effects, and they also provide insulation.  Ours are planted with sedums and other ground-hugging greenery that need only minimal maintenance.  The American Society of Landscape Architects provides an excellent explanation of the benefits of green roofs that you can share with your kids.

Upstairs Neighbors

When the County decided to renovate and expand the Gaithersburg Library, it designated part of the second floor for a satellite office of the Charles W. Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity.

The Gilchrist Center promotes cross-cultural understanding and works to connect people to needed public and private services.  It convenes services providers through networking meetings and information sharing so that organizations are aware of the resources available to Montgomery County residents and are better equipped to refer clients to needed services.

It also offers classes such as English for speakers of other languages, citizenship preparation, Spanish conversation, and basic computing.

Montgomery County Public Libraries shares the Gilchrist Center's goal of serving the County's entire diverse population, enriching the lives of all.  So we're very excited that Gilchrist Center staff and volunteers will be joining us in Gaithersburg.

Perhaps you're wondering about the man in whose honor the Center was named.  Charles W. Gilchrist served two terms as Montgomery County Executive in the late 1970's and 1980's.  Afterwards, he attended seminary and was ordained an Episcopal priest, in which capacity he continued to build community and pursue social justice.  Mr. Gilchrist recognized the importance of Montgomery County's emerging diversity and created a varied of programs that put the County on the path to becoming the welcoming community that it is today.

When we open, be sure to say "Howdy! ¡Bienvenidos! Yōkoso! Huānyíng guānglín! Hoan nghênh! Wilkommen! Ahlan wa sahlan! In kwahn deh-na meh tah! Bienvenue!" to our upstairs neighbors.  Downstairs, we'll be happy to hear it too!

Gaithersburg Interim Library Closes October 31

The Gaithersburg Interim Library, located on the second floor of Lakeforest Mall, will close its doors on October 31.

Its staff and materials will be redeployed as we prepare to open the newly renovated Gaithersburg Library, just a block away.  Watch for an announcement about the date of the library's grand opening, expected 8 to 10 weeks after the interim branch's closing.

October 19 is the last day you can choose Gaithersburg Interim Library as a pick-up location for holds.  If you have holds that don't arrive before the closing, edit their pick-up location in your account online.  Otherwise, when your hold becomes available, you'll be contacted to designate a new pick-up location.

Borrowed items may be returned to any MCPL branch, and we'll soon be installing a book drop for returns at the site of the Gaithersburg Library.

The temporary site opened its doors on December 19, 2010.  In the first nine days of service, customers borrowed more than 3,100 items.  Circulation grew so much that over 42,250 items were checked out  between April and June 2013.  The Gaithersburg Interim Library created library accounts for over 6,200 children and adults!

Until the Gaithersburg Library opens, Germantown, Quince Orchard or any MCPL branch will welcome you.

Thanks to all who made this interim facility a success.  We look forward to seeing you again at the newly renovated library.

The Shelves are Coming! The Shelves are Coming!

The Gaithersburg Library needs lots of shelves to display thousands of items that will be available to borrow. Specifically, we'll install 9941 linear feet of shelving, or 1.88 miles worth.

Two 53-foot flatbed trucks are delivering Gaithersburg Library's new shelving from Georgetown, Massachusetts, within the next couple of weeks. The trucks will travel about 475 miles with our 30 tons of shelving. You may see them unloading at the new building.

The tallest bookcases will be 66 inches, contributing to the library's atmosphere of openness. Books on the sloped bottom shelves will be canted to allow easier reading of titles and call numbers.

At the ends of some of the shelf ranges, you'll find touch-screen monitors for easy catalog searching to locate materials.

Watch this space! Each week, we'll be featuring a different aspect of the new Gaithersburg Library, its collection, technology, and services.
